Cherished Uncle of 12 nieces and nephews and 19 great nieces and nephews. Born in Boston, MA on January 7, 1957, he was the fourth child of six of the late H. Reed Gomperts and Ellen A. (Duhig) Gomperts O’Brien. Tommy graduated from English High School in 1975 where he was co-captain of the varsity football team. The sport of football was his favorite sport and passion. After graduation Tommy worked for the Boston Public School Department in multiple positions that transitioned to the newly formed Boston School Police. Tommy’s love for police work led him to the Boston Police Academy and he was sworn in on November 24, 1986. During his tenure with the police department Tommy was promoted to Detective and was awarded a Medal of Honor as well as the Schroeder Medal for Courageous Police Service. Tommy officially retired from BPD on January 4, 2000. He also received Official citations for his service from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts House of Representatives, the State Senate and Governor Jane Swift all in October of 2002. Laurie and Tommy became an inseparable couple on February 17, 2002 and were married on February 17, 2007 at Cathedral of the Holy Cross Chapel in Boston. They moved to Naples in 2009 and have had almost 23 years of wonderful memories with their children, family members and friends. Tommy spent time playing golf in Naples and volunteered with VFW Post 7369 of Naples to help restore the unmarked and abandoned graves of Veterans at Lake Trafford Memorial Gardens in Immokalee. Tommy will be fondly remembered for his charismatic, larger than life personality and raspy voice holding court watching the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins, bantering about politics and sharing stories with his countless life long friends and acquaintances at Costello’s Tavern in JP and then at Beef O’Bradys in Naples. He will be sorely missed and forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
